The Kendo Spirit

Discover Yourself Through the Way of the Sword.

More than a kendo experience

Bushido, carried into the present through kendo.

It is the legacy of generations of samurai who devoted themselves to a timeless question: “How should we live?” There is no correct answer.

It is not your answer.

So, what can you learn from it, and how will it shape the way you live?

Only you can discover your own answer.

The Journey

Experience Kendo

Learn authentic kendo in a private, personalized session. Explore its history, etiquette, and philosophy while practicing footwork, sword handling, and striking. As you face your instructor, you’ll discover that kendo is more than a martial art.

It is a lifelong practice of cultivating both the mind and the body.

Explore Bushido

Every movement, every principle, and every tradition carries the questions and reflections of those who came before us. Why do we bow? Why is the sword treated as an extension of ourselves? Why are respect and compassion essential?

Together, we’ll explore the principles of Bushido woven into kendo, discovering the philosophy that has been passed down through generations.

Reflect on Your Own Life

Before the experience, you’ll be invited to share your background, interests, and goals. Based on what you share, I’ll thoughtfully tailor the experience to what matters most to you.

Through kendo and Bushido, you’ll enter a dialogue with the generations who came before us, with me as a modern kendo practitioner, and ultimately, with yourself.

Could This Journey Be for You?

  • You seek more than sightseeing.
  • You want to understand the spirit behind Japanese culture.
  • You’re curious about Bushido and what it can teach us today.
  • You enjoy reflecting on life’s deeper questions.
  • You believe learning about Japan also means learning about yourself.
  • You value thoughtful conversations as much as physical practice.

Meet Your Guide

My name is Daichi Umino, founder of Kendo Spirit.

I’ve practiced kendo since the age of five, but over the years I’ve come to realize that kendo is far more than a martial art. It is a lifelong path of asking how we should live, treat others, and continue growing as human beings.

The Kendo Spirit was created to share that journey with people from around the world. My role is not to provide all the answers, but to guide a meaningful experience where we can explore these timeless questions together through kendo and Bushido.

I continue to learn from the generations who came before me, and every guest brings a new perspective that deepens my own understanding. I hope our time together becomes a meaningful part of your own journey as well.

    FAQ

    What is The Kendo Spirit?

The Kendo Spirit is a private experience that combines kendo, Bushido, and personal reflection.

It is not about learning kendo or finding the "correct" answer to Bushido. It is an opportunity to reflect on what these traditions mean to you and how they may influence your own life.

Do I need any kendo experience?

    No.
The Kendo Spirit is open to everyone, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners.

Because each experience is tailored to the participant's background and interests, both beginners and experienced kendo practitioners can enjoy a meaningful experience.

How is The Kendo Spirit different from the Kendo Experience and the Bushido Experience?

The Kendo Experience focuses on experiencing kendo through hands-on practice.

The Bushido Experience explores Bushido through the Nihon Kendo Kata and the words.

The Kendo Spirit brings both together, then goes one step further. Through dialogue and reflection, you will explore what these traditions mean to you and how they might influence your own life.

What will we do during the experience?

You will experience kendo, explore Bushido, and reflect on yourself through conversation.

Each experience is tailored to the participant's background, interests, and aspirations, so no two sessions are exactly the same.

Do I need to talk about myself?

    No.
You are free to decide how much you would like to share.

There is no expectation to discuss anything personal. The conversations are intended to encourage reflection, and you will never be asked to share more than you feel comfortable with.
