Be Samurai in Tokyo

Two Ways to Be Samurai

To live Japan is
To live its spirit

To live in Japan is not simply to reside here.
It is to understand the spirit that shapes this country.

See Program Details

You belong in Japan

If you respect its spirit

Respect begins with understanding

Japan lives through the hearts of those who carry its spirit.
Without the will to understand that spirit, you may live here for years and still remain a foreigner.
That spirit is deeply tied to Bushido. To seek it is to show respect.

Be Samurai

When you truly understand its spirit

Carry the sword with the heart.

The spirit of Japan endures in Samurai.
We define Samurai not as a swordsman, but as one who carries the sword with the heart.
Be Samurai. Only then can you truly understand its heart.

Why Kendo

Bushido lives on, in its purest form.

A living path, Shaped by Samurai.

Kendo is not a sport born from modern design.
It is a living tradition shaped by Samurai to survive, transformed to preserve Bushido, and still practiced today.

Kendo Spirit Dojo is a place in Tokyo where you can regularly practice authentic kendo.
Many people hesitate to start kendo because of the language barrier or the cost of equipment.
At our dojo, we provide rental armor and teach in both English and Japanese, so anyone can begin with confidence.

    Who is this dojo for?

Our dojo is for everyone, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners.
It is perfect for those who want to try kendo, learn Japanese culture, or understand the spirit of the Japanese people.

We practice all the essential elements of kendo, including:

    What is kendo?

Kendo is a traditional Japanese martial art deeply rooted in samurai culture and Bushido.
Its purpose is not only to train the body, but to develop strong and honorable character.

    What is Bushido?

Simply put, Bushido means living honestly and staying true to your beliefs.
It is about not doing what is wrong.
Its depth cannot be fully explained in just a few words.

What kind of manners are practiced?

We bow to the front and to each other, show respect, and avoid disturbing others.
All etiquette is taught step by step.

Why do so many people practice kendo?

Kendo trains both the body and the mind.
It helps you become stronger, kinder, and more disciplined.
The more you practice, the deeper its meaning becomes.

Is kendo a sport or a martial art?

    Kendo is not a sport.
It is a traditional Japanese martial art focused on personal growth, not just winning.

Why is kendo important in Japanese culture?

Kendo has passed down the spirit of Bushido for generations.
To learn kendo is to learn the heart of the Japanese people.

Why do you offer English support?

Many foreigners want to learn kendo, but feel uncomfortable because of the language barrier or joining Japanese-only groups.
We created this dojo to give them a safe and welcoming place to train.

How long does it take to improve?

    There is no single answer.
But after one year of continuous practice, many people begin to understand the true depth and beauty of kendo.

    What are kendo ranks?

Kendo starts with kyu, then moves to dan (black belt levels).
Dan begins at 1st dan and goes up to 8th dan.
The 8th dan exam is known as one of the most difficult tests in Japan and takes decades to achieve.

    Where should beginners start?

You will begin with posture and etiquette, then voice training, footwork, and how to hold the shinai.

Can I try a trial session or observe a class?

At the moment, we do not offer trial or observation sessions.
However, we may hold them in the future.

If you would like to be notified when they become available, please send us a message through the contact form and write “Notification request” in your message.
